Thanks to everyone in the Fabulous Felted Shoes Worshop

Coupeville Arts Center

(Mostly) finished shoes. From left: toe patch; inserted suede gusset that matches soling; next three: inserted ridges (purple shoe with pinked green ridge, red dragon spine, flat strip showing inside layers of colored felt); turned and tapered "lapel" style; flat strip; overflap with silver concha highlighting handmade edge of felt yardage.

Deirdre Allen (Alberta, Canada) making upholstery-grade yardage for her shoes using C-1 Norwegian felting batts & merino.

Pattern pieces waiting for assembly by Ramona Machulak (Washington state). This beautiful yardage glows like ultraviolet light when seen in person - Van Gogh's Starry Night?. .. or summer fireflies?

Unique flap design by Takla Gardner (Washington state). Flap piece is positioned to show off the handmade edge of the yardage (bottom). Silver concha with turquoise bead

Uncut felt yardages. Bottom photo: Building a surface design on felt. Yellow/green yardage shows Kimberly Brandel's (Idaho) use of building three levels into her surface design. Design elements were positioned at three different depths resulting in focal changes on the surface of the felt which creates a pleasing visual complexity in the pattern.

View across Penn Cove on Whidbey Island, Washington.  Home of the famous Penn Cove mussels.

High tide under the town pier. Hanging in the building is the complete skeleton of Rosie, a grey whale from Penn Cove.

Comments from participants....

Thank you for opening me to experiencing felting from a more process-oriented approach.  It feels wonderful, like active meditation, and comes much more naturally to me.  I also appreciate gaining a much better understanding and direct experience of the felting materials, too.   I have come away with so much to continue to explore and experiment with on my own.  I also really enjoy and truly benefit from feeling more connected now to other independent feltmakers through your generous studio programs and services.  Thanks so very much for all you provide and do!  It makes such a difference. - Joan K., CT

I am very pleased with my swatches and feel I have a much better understanding of wool and how it works in felting. I also am much more comfortable with color. It will be fun when I get a chance, to think about color combinations and composition and then design and felt a piece. Both skills are essential for a quality product. I love the quality of the samples we made and am excited to reproduce that quality in my projects. It would take years playing with combinations and paints and chips to “ see” the way (Nicole)sees color. I think the workshop was very well laid out and helpful. Nicole and Chris are a good compliment to each other and seemed to have a great respect and appreciation for each other. Very professional but very warm and comfortable.  - Katie K., VA

From November's Finnish Rugs and Wallhangings workshop

Instructors: Karoliina Arvilommi and Roderick Welch

A big thank you to Rod and Karo for their inspirational workshop which marked the first of the new international offerings at the Magpie school. We look forward to hosting them again very soon. And thanks to all of the feltmakers who helped make the nightly dinner parties so fun and lively, too! The whole weekend was a wonderful exchange of information and techniques between creative people across the globe who are united by feltmaking.

Workshop participants with Karoliina (front right) and Rod (back center). Gail's red octopus rug is inspired by an ancient Greek motif. Jane's (grey and blue) modern, industrial design works perfectly on her firmly-fulled rug.

Cathy's rug with multi-layered prefelts (and free standing spikes) required patient fulling to merge all of the layers.

Andrea's rug with Karakul tuft oriented toward camera at bottom.

Patricia's rug. Reminds us of a wonderful Kandinsky design.

Thick sample pads were made to test color blending. Approx.1 ft.(30.5 cm) square.

Pam's rug design was a favorite and reminded some of work by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Chris' rug with her common theme of stones. The runes nearly glow in the dark....

Prefelt rune inlaid in black Finnwool. Rod and Karo brought grease wools from their village on the Finnish-Russian border.

New footwear from Chris and Sharon's collaboration (boots). Chris will begin teaching the Felted Shoes class nationally in 2007 (blue shoe style).

NEW! From October's Felting Lab

Instructor: Chris White

Comments from participants about the Advanced Lab course....

"Working with all of the wools was like finding a new set of tools. I left with a Wool Encyclopedia and a new way of touching the felt as it developed."......

Nina Compagnon

"It was about abandoning our preconceptions about how to felt. We had to break down old notions of following steps and learn to respond moment to moment according to the wool and its material properties.".......

Rory Valentine

"For as many questions as it answered, it also opened my mind to the possibilities of the medium itself. I feel like I begin with the wool rather than begnning with a set of project steps."....
