CLASS SCHEDULE

Felted Rugs for the home using Local Wools

Sat May 9, 9am-5:30pm

Go green and support New England farms! Feltmaker Chris White will lead a weekend workshop on how to felt a durable, lasting rug for your home using selected wools from the Pioneer Valley and other small farms farther a-field. We’ll be using beautiful, rich hand-dyed wools and embellishments to decorate the background of natural sheep colors (brown, white or grey). Materials fees will vary depending on the size and type of wool used (approx. $85 for a 3’ x 4’ embellished rug). Rugmaking is a very physical process and participants should plan accordingly.  Discount registration is offered for people who would like to participate in the class as a team – great for couples in one home or for friends who need a special wedding gift for a mutual acquaintance! Please note that while no prior experience is required, the workshop does require physical endurance.

$100 person/$150 couple (1 rug) Deposit required ($50 person/$75 couple) plus Materials ($50 estimate). Beginner Friendly

Felting Lab

Four consecutive days

Fall 2009, Times and location to be announced

Felting Lab is Magpie’s signature workshop, designed around in-depth exploration of the feltmaking medium and wool behavior. Although samples and results are shared from each individually designed experiment, the overall experience is intensely personal.

Felting Lab is a professional intensive where participants go beyond the hit-and-miss in the felting process to learn how to better understand the felt they are making. Designed around the concept of fiber dynamics, participants learn to manipulate flat felt samples in order to understand the internal nature of the felt they are creating. Mastering these concepts results in a felt that is extremely stable, consistent, and clearly a cut above in quality. A large felting lab 1menu of different wool breeds and other fibers are offered so students can learn to custom mix blends with exactly the materiality they desire. Directional effects such as elasticity and variable shrinkage are also explored in the week-long class. All individually-designed experiments are carried out making large sheets of flat felt which are to be divided among all participants. Each person is required to do a short write-up for each experiment which is copied and distributed to everyone else along with the sample. The notebook is an invaluable reference for artists in their future work, but many former participants say the most important part of the Lab for them was experiencing their own personal dialog with individual felts – something that completely changed their feltmaking process and their appreciation of the medium. felting lab 2
